Transportation Manager - Cranbury, NJ
As the Transportation Manager you will support all aspects of a transportation operations running 24 hrs. a day and 5 days a week. The best candidate will be able to handle multiple projects at one time while still supporting the daily execution of our delivery compliance in a fast-paced environment. This will require excellent organization, planning and communication skills. This position is expected to cover their teams vacation time on any shift, availability to workday shift and night shift is a must. This role requires consistent communication with your internal team, the operations team and sales team to effectively meet our customers' expectations. Our teams pride ourselves on being able to meet customer delivery requests for same day and next day deliveries, whether that be a time contingent window or a large delivery request. This requires our team members to be consistently engaged across all departments.
What you will do:
Team & Operations Management
Lead a 24/5 transportation team including dispatchers, drivers, warehouse, and administrative staff.
Hire, train, certify, and develop direct reports; conduct annual driver certifications and periodic meetings.
Ensure all staff have necessary tools and resources to perform their roles effectively.
Collaborate with Shop Steward on union contract matters.
Fleet & Delivery Oversight
Monitor and maintain fleet utilization, out-of-service reports, and preventative maintenance schedules.
Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and internal safety standards.
Create and optimize routing manifests to meet customer delivery commitments.
Review and resolve issues related to lost shipments, missed deliveries, and time commitments.
Performance & Process Improvement
Track and manage transportation KPIs including cost, safety, and service metrics.
Develop and implement lean process improvements to reduce variable costs.
Maintain weekly driver hours and facilitate open communication.
Level-set routes to improve efficiency and reduce underutilized shifts.
Training & Compliance
Develop and lead driver training programs and yearly recertifications.
Implement measurable training procedures and maintain SOPs for all transportation roles.
Track employee safety performance and conduct root cause analysis for incidents.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Sales to meet delivery requirements and resolve issues.
Build cross-functional relationships to enhance customer service and reduce costs.
Maintain strong communication with drivers, warehouse, and sales teams.
Additional Responsibilities
Participate in monthly ride-along with drivers.
Support other projects and duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and VP of Operations.
What you will bring:
Bachelor's degree preferred with emphasis on business management and/or supply chain or equivalent knowledge through job-related experience and training.
3 to 5 years prior experience managing in a union environment.
Understanding of contractual bargaining agreements is required.
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
Strong knowledge of Fleet Maintenance.
Understanding and experience with GPS tracking.
Excellent organization and Communication skills
Experience in building and managing SOP's
Ability to work in a face paced environment
Ability to plan work effectively to completion and adjust as business needs change
Availability to work any shift of 24 hr. 5 days a week operation as needed
Ability to identify and correct delivery and performance issues quickly
Support both short term and long-term projects related to performance of transportation department
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
The ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout their shift.
The ability to utilize hands to enter data by traditional keyboard.
The ability to lift, push, and pull material and objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and heavier weights with proper equipment.
The ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform various duties.
The ability to operate powered industrial trucks safely. Training will be provided.
This job is performed primarily in general office and distribution warehouse environments.
Location: Cranbury, NJ
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm (additional hours on as needed basis)
Salary:75K-95K
