What you need to know

Starting Pay Rate: $14.25/hr.

Position Details: This is a 10 month position working from mid-August to mid-May. August 1, 2021 will be the first official 10 month employment period. The position will be 100% working 40 hours per week, hours may vary.

Required Education and Experience:
  • High school graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years' work experience

Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid vehicle operator's license and good driving record
  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "B" vehicle operator's license (commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 45 days of employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate several types of buses and vans to the extent of maneuvering safely through congested traffic conditions, adverse weather and road conditions
  • Exhibit a high degree of mental concentration and independent judgement
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with computers
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Other Factors:
  • This position will be covered by DOT regulations and be in a random drug and alcohol testing pool
  • This position also requires drivers to walk distances of up to a ½-mile unassisted between bus assignments
  • This position also requires drivers to bend/stoop to conduct pre-trip bus inspection, kneeling to secure wheelchair on the bus and climbing limited stairs into high-floor buses

Preferred Experience:
  • Previous commercial driving experience, customer service experience, training experience and mechanical experience

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
  • Commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement

  • Driving - Drive Texas A&M University transit routes as scheduled; operate assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner and in adherence to all University, departmental and unit policies as well as local, state and federal laws. Provide customer service by assisting with questions on policies, routes, checking ID's, accurately documenting passenger counts, para service, etc.
  • Administrative - Conduct a proper pre and post trip vehicle inspection and note any discrepancies at the beginning and end of every shift; report any potentially hazardous vehicle maintenance or safety issues immediately to a Transit Supervisor or dispatch. Responsible for cleanliness of all equipment assigned during shift.
  • Department Objectives/Customer Service - Transportation Services is committed to providing courteous, responsive, quality service to our customers by fostering a respectful, positive, and welcoming environment for all. Employees are responsible for the following: representing the department to internal and external customers by actively supporting diversity; maintaining 100% on time compliance with all university required training for all employees; approving time worked and requesting appropriate leave in a timely manner; reading and responding to e-mail; reviewing/reading information listed on the department intranet; performing assigned tasks in a safe manner and utilizing personal protective items/equipment as appropriate or instructed by supervisor or department; reporting unsafe actions or conditions to supervisor immediately and supporting and following unit/department safety guidelines, practices and policies. Persons in this position will be required to drive state vehicle to travel to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
